Koh Larn: Tourist’s Death Prompts Police Investigation
The serene beauty of Koh Larn, a popular island getaway off the coast of Pattaya, Thailand, was shattered Thursday afternoon by the discovery of a deceased Japanese tourist. The 48-year-old man was found hanged from a tree near a scenic viewpoint behind Khao Phra Yai, a prominent hill overlooking the island’s twin beaches. Pattaya City police were notified at approximately 4:30 p. m., prompting a swift response from authorities.
Pol Col Anan Mahakitassawakul, an investigating officer at the Pattaya City station, confirmed the details. Police, forensic specialists, and rescue personnel arrived to find the man’s body suspended from a tree by a rope. The scene contrasted the tranquil surroundings with the stark reality of the tragedy.
Scattered within a 10-meter radius of the body were personal belongings, offering potential clues. These included a black hooded long-sleeved shirt, a camouflage hiking hat, a shoulder bag, a cigarette pack and lighter, a photograph of an elderly woman, two packs of Viagra, and Bluetooth earphones.
A Japanese passport, found on a stone bench in a nearby pavilion, confirmed the man’s nationality and age. Forensic technicians collected this crucial identification, along with the personal effects, for examination.
A security guard employed by the Pattaya City municipality reported that a tourist discovered the body. The guard and his team secured the area and notified authorities, allowing investigators to begin their work promptly.
While the cause of death remains under investigation, authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to reconstruct the man’s movements. The investigation will explore both foul play and suicide.
The man’s body was transported to Bhattamakun Hospital, pending notification of next of kin. Contacting his family in Japan, and arranging repatriation or local burial, will add complexity to this situation. The photograph of the elderly woman raises questions about her relationship to the deceased.
