Bangkok Red Line Expands: Cabinet Approves Nakhon Pathom Extension
Finance Ministry approval clears path for the 20.5 kilometer extension, connecting Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom by January 2029.
Thailand’s ambitious plan to extend the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) Red Line is progressing rapidly, with cabinet review expected as early as next month. This westward expansion will significantly improve connectivity between Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom, easing commutes and boosting regional accessibility. Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced on Wednesday that the 15.17-billion-baht project has received crucial approvals from the Finance Ministry, the Budget Bureau, and the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC). This paves the way for its imminent submission to the cabinet.
The project’s successful navigation of these key government bodies underscores its viability and alignment with national development goals. The Department of Rail Transport (DRT) is now responsible for finalizing the necessary documentation and preparing the comprehensive cabinet proposal.
The DRT is expected to complete this preparation this week, compiling all relevant information. The finalized proposal will then be submitted to the Secretariat of the Cabinet (SoC) for further review and inter-agency consultation. This process includes seeking input from stakeholders, such as the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, to address potential environmental impacts and ensure sustainable development.
Minister Suriya anticipates finalization this month and presentation to the cabinet in early April. This ambitious timeline reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing Thailand’s railway infrastructure and public transportation. The 20.5-kilometer Red Line extension will run from Taling Chan Station in Bangkok to Salaya Station in Nakhon Pathom, with a new branch line to Siriraj Station providing convenient access to Siriraj Hospital.
This expansion will improve commutes and enhance inter-provincial connectivity, fostering economic growth and regional development. The planned route includes eight new stations strategically located to serve a wider population and stimulate economic activity. If the cabinet approves, construction is scheduled to begin in January 2026, with completion expected in January 2029.
The Red Line extension represents a significant investment in Thailand’s transportation future. By expanding access to efficient and reliable public transport, the government aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce commute times, and improve the overall quality of life. This project embodies the nation’s commitment to infrastructure modernization and sustainable urban development. The upcoming cabinet decision will be pivotal, determining the future of this transformative railway project and its potential to reshape the region’s transportation landscape.
