Koh Phangan Couple Arrested for Hair Salon Scam
A seemingly innocuous haircut appointment at a Koh Phangan salon took a dramatic turn last week, highlighting the power of surveillance technology in uncovering petty crime. A Pakistani couple found themselves in trouble after their elaborate scheme to avoid paying for a haircut was exposed by CCTV footage, turning their attempted escape into a viral sensation.
The incident occurred on the evening of February 21, 2025, at Neptune Salon. According to salon owner Kanjana Matura, the couple arrived at 8:02 p. m. and initially appeared to be ordinary customers. However, during the haircut, a carefully orchestrated performance began. The husband, whose name has not been released, reportedly insisted on a shorter cut, much to his wife’s apparent dismay. This manufactured disagreement escalated into a full-blown argument, disrupting the salon’s tranquil atmosphere.
After the haircut, the couple initiated the second phase of their plan—a hasty escape. The husband dramatically produced an empty wallet, feigning an inability to pay. They then stormed out, loudly proclaiming dissatisfaction with the service. This carefully constructed narrative of disgruntled customers, however, quickly unraveled.
The salon’s CCTV cameras captured the entire charade. The footage revealed not only the conspicuously empty wallet but also the couple laughing outside the establishment moments after their dramatic exit. This jovial celebration of their perceived success proved to be their undoing.
«The footage clearly showed their wallet was empty when they pretended to pay, and they were seen laughing together after leaving the salon,» Matura told reporters. Frustrated by the blatant deception, Matura posted the incriminating footage on her Facebook page, «Karn Karnjana,» to warn other businesses on the popular tourist island.
The viral post quickly gained traction, attracting attention from local residents and authorities. On February 22, Matura filed a police report, and Koh Phangan Police swiftly located the Pakistani tourists. Confronted with the undeniable evidence, the couple admitted to their ruse and agreed to pay the outstanding 500-baht (approximately $15) fee.
